What is Eyelid Bumps?

Most bumps on the eyelid are styes. A stye is an inflamed oil gland on the edge of your eyelid, where the eyelash meets the lid.

Most bumps on the eyelid are styes, which are swollen oil glands at the edge of your eyelid. They look red and puffy, like pimples, and can be tender.

Causes

Styes happen when an oil gland gets blocked, allowing bacteria to grow. They can appear quickly and often heal on their own. Sometimes, a stye can turn into a chalazion, which might affect your vision.

Certain factors, like Demodex mites (tiny bugs on skin), can make styes worse, especially if you have blepharitis (eyelid inflammation).

Other Bumps

Other common eyelid bumps include:

  • Xanthelasma: Yellow patches that are usually harmless.
  • Papillomas: Small pink bumps that can grow but are not harmful.
  • Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that may affect vision.

Symptoms

Along with the bump, you may feel:

  • A scratchy sensation in your eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Increased tearing
  • Tenderness
